I wasn’t aware that modern America still talks about hippies, although I did see what appeared to be a walking post mortem the other day. The “Summer of Love,” the advent of the hippy, was 40 years ago.

Just to help you frame your perception with reality….

They did drugs and rioted.
People used cocaine in the 20’s and it was very fashionable. Ever hear of Jack Kerouac? He and his buddies went across America right after WWII wacked on benzedrine. Drug use is nothing new in this country. It was so endemic by 1900 that the FDA had to be created to control opiates, among other things. Hippies brought “illicit” drugs to the middle class, as their parents were taking valiums and having their evening martinis. One drug simply came in prettier container, that’s all.

As for their rioting, there was some unpleasantness when Nixon escalated the Viet Nam War in1970, but most people remember hippies placing flowers in the guns of National Guardsmen. It might do this country well to have a “love in” some weekend, as we are satiated with hate currently.

The shamed their parents and tore their families apart.
That’s a genuinely interesting observation. How many families were torn apart by living in the plastic society with it rampant divorce and dog-eat-dog competition? Divorces were becoming endemic then. How many families went bust trying to “keep up with the Jones?” How many families were torn apart when their sons died in Viet Nam for nothing? Their parents were already ashamed of themselves, ashamed of their phoniness and plasticity, ashamed of the emptiness they felt, despite their almost obsessive materialism and money worship. If this weren’t the case, the whole movement would’ve never have taken place.

They created chaos and made our country appear out-of-control. No more so than the flappers in the 20’s with their gin bottles under the garter belts, lindyhopping on flagpoles created chaos and made us appear out-of-control. America has always been seen as slightly “tipsy,” and hooked on sensationalism. Ever hear of dancers doing the Charleston on the wings of Bi-Planes? That made us appear no more out-of-control than lynching a black man for speaking to a white woman.

Who and what is this benefiting to label that behavior “love” and “peace” today. That’s an incomprehensible question, but I’ll answer it anyway: no one. We’ve rejected love and peace and now we’re losing another war, only this time, we’re not amazing the world as we do it, as in during the hippies’ era; instead, we’re disgusting and alienating the world as we protect our capital. And I’ve noticed lately how unwilling the world is now to have America be it’s center.

“U” may not know as much concerning the role hippies played in America’s cultural heritage as you think, as it relates to “love and peace”, except what you’re fed on your television network of choice.

And I can only imagine who you’re trying to please by such a strange posting. It’s roughly the equivalent of wondering if the flappers where the precursor of the modern woman, when everyone knows they were, liberation, Affirmative Action, etc., and all.
