Can Sports Still Be Pure When Money Is Involved?
Question by Fatty: Can sports still be pure when money is involved?
Boxing (fixed matches), baseball (hgh, and other steroids), basketball (point shaving, gambling referees), even cycling, etc… It seems like a lot of controversy has popped up in ALL sports lately. Can sports really be pure as long as there are millions if not billlions of dollars involved?
Tim – good analogy, I was a college athlete. I do understand the mindset of competition. It drives us all, not just in sports, but in life. The true questions is not “did they get their with their love of the game” rather “has money interfered with their ability to play the game, in a pure manner”. I think this is what gets me, at what point does someone that worked so hard decide, “you know, i think i will start cheating today”? its not a love of the game and winning, its money, millions of dollars worth of money… or at least in my humble opinion.

If your good enough at sports that someone will pay you to play it, then it’s pure.
You can’t get that good at something without truly loving it.
-Side note; I don’t know anyone that played competitive sports that cares about all these “problems”. Usually it’s people that never played sports. Or maybe somebody that just played little league. There is a mindset that is mandatory for competitive sports. It is not possible to excel at sports without winning being very important. Sometimes that mindset gets the better of people. It’s a shame, but it’s part of the game. Whether it’s steroids or tripping a competitor, cheating is part of the game. Always has been, always will be. It sucks, but it’s not surprising. It’s like musicians that don’t smoke weed or do cocaine. They are doing it the right way. But it’s not like they lose their taste for music just becuase the drummer is always blasted. He would rather play with a seriously talented drummer that’s stoned then some weak drummer that’s sober. It’s all about the game, and wanting to play with/against the best. That’s how pro athletes get as good as they are. Playing against the best. Sometimes your gonna come across a teammate or competitor that sucks. Just a genuinely bad person. Who cares? The guy can play. He plays well. I’m not out here trying to make friends. I’m out here collecting W’s. I want to win, and I want to win against the best possible competition. If they gotta do some roids to beat me, then let them. Know what I mean?
